Our 2025 - 2026 series of presentations began Thursday, October 30, with the showing of the classic Pedro Infante film "Nosotros los probres," filmed in 1948. Directed by Ismael Rodríguez and starring Evita Muñoz "Chachita" and Blanca Estela Pavón in addition to Infante, the film is the first in a trilogy of movies with Infante as the main star, with “Ustedes los ricos” following later in 1948 and “Pepe el toro” in 1953. All three were produced during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema.
The first Thursday of each month is a film, but this year we added a matinee showing November 20 of "Los Tres Mosqueteros." Starring Cantinflas (Mario Moreno) and featuring María Félix and Pedro Armendárez. This movie was followed in December by the second of the Infante film trilogy ("Ustedes los ricos"). In January, we watched the biography of "Cantinflas" (2014) starring Óscar Jaenada in the role of the great actor, and our February movie starred two great actors of Mexican cinema—Jorge Negrete and Pedro Infante—in the 1950s, romantic comedy "Dos Tipoos de Cuidado." Our March selection honored one of Mexico's great visual artists—the American movie "Frida" (2002) starring Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo. Movies slotted for the 2026.-2027 season include "La Mujer del Puerto" (1934), "La Escondida" (1956), "Los Olvidados" (1950), and "La Cucaracha" With María Félix and Dolorea del Río (1959). We believe that watching Mexican cinema is an enjoyable way to absorb Mexican history and culture.
Our History Association does much more than watch movies, however. In November we had a reception in the Comumitario Nelita Bours to celebrate the publication of our textbook on Álamos history, distributed to all public and private school 5th grade students that month. More than 200 books were distributed, and this project will continue year after year. Book subjects included the history of silver and gold mining near Álamos, the architecture and historical buildings in the city center, the tunnels under the streets, and independence, the revolution and events of importance in the 350-year-old recorded history of the municipio.
In December AHA board member Trini Rangel discussed the celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe, and in a second presentation, he talked about the Christmas and New Year's celebrations in the state of Sonora—ending with the day of epiphany January 6. In January board member Errol Zimmerman discussed the life and music of native son Alfonso Ortiz Tirado, and earlier in January AHA members carpooled to the small community of Munihuasa to visit the primary school and interview local families. February's schedule included a field trip to meet religious art craftsmen in Etchojoa as well as a presentation by Rafael Arenas Wong entitled "The art of making
Tortillas" based on a chapter of John Hilton's "Sonora sketchbook." Also in March Katherine Callingham introduced a number of local artists who displayed and discussed their work, and we concluded the season March 19 with our annual meeting..

We normally have three meetings per month during the winter season, and we announce each meeting on the community Facebook page entitled "Residents of Alamos and Frequent Visitors." In Álamos the cost is 400 pesos per person per year, and people not in Álamos can join by sending a check for $20 U.S. (per person per year) to the Alamos History Association at our U.S. address.
