La Biblioteca de Investigación de nuestra Asociación de Historia de Álamos cuenta con copias de artículos periodísticos relacionados con Álamos que se remontan a mediados del siglo XIX. Disponemos de un artículo del New York Times sobre el fallecimiento de María Félix en 2002; reportajes de múltiples fuentes relativos a los años de la Revolución (1910-1921); una crónica de 1904 sobre el ascenso de Ramón Corral a la vicepresidencia de México y otra sobre su muerte en Francia en 1912; y muchos otros recortes digitalizados sobre una gran variedad de temas vinculados a Álamos. 1940

January 25, 2012 - Located across from Álamos City Hall and the Hotel Mansión was a silk factory, which began in the 19th Century and operated for more than 50 years. Sra. Hortensia Vega Navarrette writes in a History Association interview (The Vega Family) of working in the factory during the early 1940s.

About the only difference in the 1954 picture at left and the 2008 picture at right is the tree in the recent photo.

Novmber 7, 2012 - The Álamos slaughterhouse advanced commerce and sanitation for the municipality when it was built in 1902, and Mexico’s vice president, don Ramón Corral, considered it one of the best in Mexico during his visit to Álamon in 1907. El Barrio Rastro (left) still has the name, but no longer the building.

March 12, 2012 - The Álamos Film Festival celebrated its second birthday in March, 2012, and during this event's multi-year run a number of excellent documentaries and films were presented.

November 9, 2012 - for the past two years students in Scottsdale, AZ, and all of us have stayed a week with families in their sister city. In this coming spring (2013) nine COBACH students in Álamos will travel to Scottsdale to continue the program.

November 2, 2012 - Álamos Presidente Benjamín Anaya announced that work has started again to complete the Álamos-Maciaca road after a four- year delay. Pavement will be added to the final nine kilometers of the road.

August 28, 2012 - Álamos Presidente Joaquín Navarro was pleased to announce that City Hall would not need a loan to continue operation when I knew administration takes over September 15, 2012

(ABOVE) January 9, 2012 - Álamos presidente Anaya, with the help of the Cobre del Mayo mining company, delivered a medical ambulance to the community of El Mocúzari and turned it over to the doctor in charge of the health clinic.

(RIGHT) January 6, 2013 - DIF, in cooperation with other community groups, sponsored the traditional Rosca the Reyes in front of La Purísima Church. The celebration extended the arms of friendship to the community.

January, 2013 - Álamos cronista Juan Carlos Holguín Balderrama traces the genealogy of one man as he and his descendants travel from Spain to Venezuela and finally to Mexico.

January, 2013 -There is little mention in the history of Sonora about the Spanish captain who wanted to move Álamos, with good reason, to a location with plentiful water and away from the mines. Domingo Terán de los Ríos didn’t succeed in carrying out his plan, and Álamos has its current location.

March, 2013 - Álamos cronista Juan Carlos Holguín Balderrama tries to separate fact from fiction in the legend of the tunnels of Álamos, noting that the buildings the tunnels supposedly connect were constructed up to 150 years apart. He ends his essay with a plea to “dig down” and end this mystery.

January, 2014 - The musical “Estudiantinas” have brought happiness and joy to the streets of Álamos since the group was founded 25 years ago by teacher and author Juan Vidal. The student musicians perform during the Ortiz Tirado Music Festival as well as at many other occasions throughout the year. The current director is Rafael Figueroa.

June, 2014 - The rich history of Álamos is entertwined with the Bours House on the main plaza, in which don Tomás R. Bours was married to doña Manuela Goyeneche, a union which produced an extensive and prominent Sonora family. Álamos historian Juan Carlos Holguín Balderrama shares the history of this important house.

June, 2014 - June 17 at 1:30 p.m. the first rain of the summer season fell in Álamos, with a heavy rain initially lasting 40 minutes but continuing with lighter rain for nearly two hours. The Arroyo la Aduana “ran” for the first time since the rainy season last year.

June, 2014 - The National Institute of Statistics and Geography in its 2010 census shows that 60,800 citizens of Sonora primarily speak indigenous languages. Nearly 40,000 are speakers of Yoreme, the native language of the Mayos. Two indigenous languages once spoken in Sonora, ópata and kikapú, are considered “lost.”

January, 2015 - Mayor Benjamín Anaya Rosas recognized the work of the Álamos Police force in a celebration at Álamos City Hall on Tuesday, January 6. The activities began with a ceremony at the cemetery in memory of police who had died in the line of duty.

January, 2015 - Cuban soprano Marybel Ferrales, who has taught at the university of Sonora in Hermosillo for the past 20 years, will be recognized during the festival Alfonso Ortiz Tirado for her accomplishments in music education. Her students include many Sopranos, who have performed in previous FAOT concerts.

January, 2015 - Soprano Lydia Rendón will sing the title role of “Carmen” when FAOT presents the complete opera on January 29 for the first time in Sonora. The Orquesta Filharmónica de Sonora with musicians from Sonora and all over Mexico will participate in this open-air production of Bizet’s classic opera.

January, 2015 - Álamos Police Chief Benjamín Mejía was happy to report that all police officers passed the surprise drug test given this week, proving that Álamos has a “clean” and trustworthy police department. Police forces across Sonora are given periodic drug tests throughout the year.

February, 2016 - Mayor Axel Omar Salas gave out scholarships of 1,500 pesos each to 95 university students this week, rewarding their effort and dedication to their studies. The scholarships will be given in two installments (the second part in August) and will cover needed educational expenses.

June, 2016 - The Commission for the Protection of Natural Areas (CONANP) oversees the flora and fauna within sections of the municipality of Álamos, and works to protect the area’s unique biodiversity, according to Elvira Rojero Díaz of the organization.

BELOW- June, 2016 - Jesús Manuel Gutiérrez Hernández, coordinator for the prevetion of Crime in Álamos, announced that the organization “The Third Juvenile Encounter” will meet here this October to develop a national plan for youth crime prevention. The organization will partner with state universities in building this plan.

April, 2017 - approximately $200,000 is needed to complete the La Colorado park project, located in Álamos, which is become a huge tourist attraction in southern Sonora. Jennifer MacKay, President of the La Colorado civic association, said plans include attracting extreme sports, participants, as well as people interested in enjoying nature firsthand.

April, 2017 - Luis Videgaray, Mexican Secretary of Foreign Relations, said the government of Mexico will defend immigrants whose deportation from the U.S. to Mexico is in violation of laws. Parents who have lived in the U.S. without papers are sometimes being deported while their children, U.S. citizens, are entitled to remain in the U.S.

June, 2017 - The Sonoran Department of Public Works (CECOP) has designated 27 million pesos for the improvement of infrastructure of schools in the south of Sonora. Schools in the region of Álamos, Benito Juárez, Etchojoa, Huatabampo, Navojoa, and Quiriego will receive funds for the rehabilitation of 43 schools.

August, 2018 - Telemundo Network is filming the telenovela “Falsa Identidad” on the streets of Álamos during July and August. Staring Sergio Goyri in the title role of “Gavino Gaona,” the production has led to excitement from the Álamos community and an increase in tourism during the hot summer months.

January, 2019 - Governor Claudia Pavolich of Sonora and Governor Doug Ducey of Arizona reaffirmed their commitments to joint projects to enhance education, security, and health during a meeting of the Arizona- Sonora Commission in Phoenix, AZ. This international relationship began in 1959.

January, 2019 - those living near the Álamos Mountain and Cuchujaqui River Preserve complain that (1) the lack of adequate security might lead to accidents, (2) bad odors have come from the dumping of trash, and (3) local businesses have not benefitted despite the 15 million pesos invested in the first step of the project.

January, 2019 - Columnist Alejandro Encinas Rodríguez examines Mexico policies of immigration, advocationg for the humane treatment of those entering Mexico to escape poverty, violence, and persecution. We should not classify migrants as criminals, he argues, and work to eliminate the problems which cause forced migration.

January, 2020 - The 36th Alfonso Ortiz Tirado International Music Festival had 150,000 in attendance over the nine-day event, with more than 80,000 attending the closing night concerts featuring soprano Marija Vidovic, reknown popular singer Alejandro Fernández, and a pop-rock program at the Plaza de Armas.

(ABOVE) - March, 2020 - Known for decades as a vacation spot, Mexico is now attracting foreign workers and retirees. The Mexican government has issued 333,404 work permits to foreign professionals in the past six years, and Mexico is also a top-20 destinations country for retirees from abroad. (ABOVE RIGHT) - Due to increased concern over coronavirus infections, the Álamos airport will be closed until the end of May. Airport director Daniel Aragón said the only activity in the next two months will be in flying some planes currently parked at the airport to other locations for safekeeping.

March, 2020 - To prepare for the National Day of Health, Hospital Comunitario director José Consuelo Moreno Ortega sent nurses and health workers house-to-house in Álamos to give out basic health information and check on vaccinations for children. Mayor Victor Balderrama said that these actions will bring a huge benefit to Álamos.

October, 2020 - In response to her sadness over the cancellation of FAOT 2021, 19-year-old college student Cynthia Martínez created a webpage to help artists across Sonora sell their works. Pandemic restrictions have made it difficult for artists to market and sell their creations, and on Cynthia’s platform 100% of the money goes to the artists themselves.

January, 2021 - Silvia Judith Zavala Acuña, a member of the Álamos Dog Foundation, has complained to city authorities regarding 200 Savage dogs who lives near the Álamos landfill and have been known to kill cows and calves. Acuña has tried to solve the problem through castration and giving puppies for adoption, but the wild dog problem remains.

January, 2021 - Sonora Governor Claudia Pavolich announced that Álamos will have 70,000 square meters of new paved streets, structural repairs for five churches, and the historic Bartolomé school will be reconstructed with state moneys. In all, the state of Sonora will fund 170 separate projects to benefit the Álamos municipio.

April, 2022 - Pine and oak trees, rodents and reptiles, and animals in danger of extinction have been devoured by a forest fire near Álamos. Not yet fully controlled after four days, the fire has not yet reached ranch houses or the communities within the municipio.

April, 2022 - Omar del Valle Colosio, Secretary of Finance and Public Credit for Sonora, has advocated that the Only Sonora program be extended so that foreign vehicles can freely travel through all of Sonora and not just to Empalme. Tourists can currently drive from Sonora's northern border to Empalme without a car permit, but must buy a permit to visit the southern portions of the state—including Álamos.

April, 2022 - the secretary of the navy sent on MI-17 helicopter to help combat the fire near Álamos. Edgardo Robles, the commander of the National Forest Commission, send that strong winds and extreme heat has been a problem, but the helicopter has help them gain control over 65% of the area.
