Preserving the History of Álamos and Sonora online

Making videos of History Association presentations, projects, and interviews was not practical until the past few years. With improvements in smart phone technology, everyone can now make a video—whereas in the past only “professionals” had the equipment. We have a few videos made before 2015, but recording our presentations and making video interviews began just before the pandemic in 2020—and has continued ever since. A video is now made of each formal presentation, field trip, and History Association interview, and we're searching through old DVDs to find the few presentations previously recorded.
On this page of our website we have three categories of videos. The first section consists of our video interviews with long-time Álamos residents, and our priority now is to transfer what we now have on DVDs into the Youtube format–-a process that will take many months to complete.
The second section consists of “Walk and Talk” which we started making last year. We have walked around the Plaza Alameda detailing the history of the many shops and businesses which were once there, walked through the Mercado and interviewed vendors while giving the history of this nearly 140-year-old market, and walked up and down the kissing alley (callejón del beso) giving the history giving the history of this once-important street. On this video we relate the story of the “beggar who smelled like violets,” which John Hilton immortalized in his 1940s publication “Sonora Sketchbook.” Other videos cover the panteón, the main church, the La Capilla chapel, and the weekly tianguis.
In the third category are video recordings of our presentations since 2021, as well as a few slide shows of previous presentations. We can't record every meeting, though; once a month we show classic and contemporary Mexican movies, and we fail to record many of our field trips. Our goal, though, is to eventually record everything so that the history of Álamos and Sonora can be readily available online.
