June, 2013 - Álamos cronista Juan Carlos Holguín Balderrama writes that droughts have been a persistent problem in this area of Sonora, with a notation to this effect in the journals of Marcos de Niza in 1539. Written records from the 17th Century onward reveal periods of up to three years without rain, leading to hardships and death among those living here.


June, 2013 - Six long-time residents of Álamos give their opinions about the town’s struggle for a sustainable water supply. Summer rains produce water, but shortages exist during most of the year. Six long-time Álamos residents were interviewed, and they reflected on water problems that have existed since their childhood.


June, 2013 - Domingo José Rafael Román Larraguíbel Martínez was born in Mexico City and came to Álamos to test the quality of metals at the Mint (Casa de Moneda), having a great reputation in this field. Despite being married to a lady in Chihuahua, he and a local woman had a son who also became a prominent citizen of our "city of the portales."


August, 2013 - Born in Álamos in 1822, the son of Don José Maria Almada, "Chato" Almada, lived among great wealth and power. It's truly a pity that this valiant and charismatic leader died on the wrong side of history— considered a traitor—after embracing the imperialist cause.


August, 2013 - An after-school arts program, affiliated with the National Institute of Art (INBA), for youth aged 10-13 will begin August 26, offering two-hour classes twice a week at la Casa de Cultura. City Coordinator of Education and Culture Javier Valenzuela Lastra said that young people can choose between studies in music, dance, theatre, or the visual arts.


August, 2013 - Governor Guillermo Padrés (center at back) travel to almost November 11 to present computers to fifth and sixth grade students at Revolucuón Primary school. Sonora will receive 110,000 computers through a federal program, and Gov. Padrés noted many other achievements in education during the first four years of his term.


November, 2013 - Tony Estrada has been the only director of the Museo Costumbrista de Álamos, which will celebrate its 29th anniversary November 10. He works each day to help us understand and appreciate the richness of the history and culture of Álamos and Sonora.
